Dear Friends,
That Friday afternoon it seemed like an open and shut case. Jesus was dead and buried. He was gone for good. For the Romans, it was a useful warning to trouble-makers. For the Sanhedrin, it was just punishment for a clever con-man. For the disciples, it was crushing disillusion and despair. For his mother, it was the indescribable pain of watching her boy be destroyed. His story wasn't supposed to end that way. And, of course, it didn't.

Dear Friends,
Forty days is a long time… long enough for God to wash the earth with the waters of the Flood… long enough for a fasting Jesus to come face to face with the great work before him. Forty days certainly is a long time… but has it been long enough for us to get on with the serious business of Lent… long enough for us to repent… long enough for us to align our lives with God’s purpose for us? Let’s consider these questions in the context of this week’s gospel… the Passion… the culmination of Lent… the threshold of the Resurrection...

As we have explored this year in previous gospels, Jesus is all-man and all-God… both natures simultaneously occupying one body and one soul. This week the human Jesus comes face to face with his human mortality. In time it is a situation we will all face…hopefully at an advanced age, surrounded by loved ones and eased into a gentle passage. That’s not what confronts Jesus...

Dear Friends,
I’ll let you in on a trade secret. Most young preachers are a lot like rookie baseball players. When we first mount the pulpit, we think we’re going to hit a home run every time. We pray that God will inspire us to share the exactly right, life-changing message for a soul in need. Over time we learn that life, like baseball, is more a game of inches. Rather than swinging for the seats, we usually just try to make contact. We stick to the fundamentals and we try not to make too many errors...
