Dear Friends,
To his listeners, this story was taken right from real life. They were farmers and fishermen, craftsmen and laborers… maybe even a few shepherds. They related immediately to the long hours, the vigilance and the dedication that was needed to protect livestock from predators. They knew the damage that wolves could do if they ever got in among the fold. These people lived on very thin margins and they understood that the loss of a single sheep could make a big difference. For them, the message, its meaning and the pivotal role of this messenger were all self-evident.

Dear Friends,
Any fair assessment of this week's gospel would rate the disciples as pretty slow on the uptake. In various gospel accounts, five times the risen Christ shows his friends that the prophesies concerning his Resurrection were all true. He had been taken away from them… been tortured… been crucified… died and was buried. But now, he is risen in glory. He is not a ghost. He is living flesh and blood… their friend and teacher, returned in triumph over death… just as he had told them he would!
